Last weekend brought every type of result…. so something for everyone.
The First Team were up against West Wickham in the AFA cup and another shut-out from the home side allowed a single goal to win them the match. This takes them through to the Quarter Finals away at Nottsborough with dreams of a 3rd OG’s cup final in three years edging closer.
In a stop-start affair at the Paulin ground, OG 2XI drew 1-1 with Winchmore Hill. The 2s started slowly and were lucky not to concede in the first few minutes with Rosson making several important stops. However, the new look side soon gelled and looked much more defensively sound as the half went on. Furthermore, OGs were looking dangerous on the break with Eoin, Rikki, Onur and Jay also pressing the Winchmore defenders effectively when out of possession.
After about half an hour, George Owen strode through the midfield and hit a sweetly struck shot from all of 30 yards. Unfortunately for George, the ball was hit directly at the keeper. Fortunately for George, the keeper inexplicably threw the ball backwards into his own net in a moment which can only be described as Taibi-esque. The 2s then finished the half strongly and looked good for their lead.
As the game went on, the pattern began to change with the twos dropping deeper and deeper and playing on the break even more. While Winchmore were still struggling for clear cut opportunities, they were also dominating possession to a greater extent. In a game with a number of short stoppages for one reason or another, there was also one very long stoppage and even a change of pitch late on as the Winchmore Hill winger seemed to injure his ankle quite badly and required serious medical attention. After the restart, the game continued in a similar pattern until Winchmore equalised with a smart strike from their forward with 5 minutes left. The 2s hung on for the draw however and deserved their point for a dogged performance all round.
